Meet Carol!
Carol Snelson is an elite Newborn Care Specialist (NCS) registered here at Harmony Baby Concierge. As stated before, Carol has been in the childcare industry for over 30 years. Carol had started with fill-in work on the weekends, as her NCS friends needed a break. Once her nanny kids grew up, she transitioned into NCS work full-time. She specifically enjoys watching how babies grow, bond, and learn (even in the first days). Carol got her Newborn Care Specialist, Advanced Newborn Care Specialist, and Sleep Solutions - Birth to 6-month certifications through Newborn Care Solutions Institute. She has her New Parent Educator Training with CAPPA, Nannyguard Safety and Security Training with Athena Academy & NANNYGUARDS, and Infant Massage Training through Infant Massage USA.
Conversation with Carol
Q. What are some strengths as an NCS/Nanny/Doula that have benefited the families you work with?
Being a source of support for new parents—especially first-timers who are overwhelmed. Guiding them, easing anxiety, and helping build confidence. I enjoy using the knowledge from classes that I have taken like sleep conditioning, feeding support, and infant care techniques, to help the parents meet their goals with the baby.
Q. What is your main goal when supporting families?
Each family is different and has different goals. On average my main goals are to educate and support parents, establish healthy sleep habits, support feeding (bottle or breast), and most of all provide expert newborn care.
Q. What are your beliefs surrounding infant and early childhood sleep and routine?
My belief is that each baby and family is different. I do believe that having a daytime routine can be helpful in baby sleeping longer through the night (on average 12 hours by 12-16 weeks). I also understand that second-time parents find it hard to follow a routine with a baby due to older kid's activities. I try to help these parents meet their goals by working on a routine that works for them.
Q. Describe yourself as a person in 3-5 adjectives
Nurturing, Supportive, Knowledgeable, flexible and Trustworthy
Q. What are the most important factors in determining a good fit between yourself and a prospective family?
open communication
Carol’s Vibe
Q. If your life was a movie, what title would it be (and why)
Burp, Bottle, Bed...repeat! Why? Because this is pretty much what an NCS does most nights!
Q. A True or False statement based on your work experience (and a short explanation)
I've been in the childcare business a LONG time! Completely true! I started in 1981 right out of nanny school working for a family 5 18 hour days per week with a 2-week-old. 12 years with that family then 5 years with the next and my last nanny family I was with for 8 years. Now working as a Newborn Care Specialist since 2013. That is 38 years of working with other people's children!
Q. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a new nanny working with babies?
Ask questions and learn how to properly make a bottle (either breast milk or formula)
Q. Favorite baby items?
Onesie or baby gown for easy changing at night.
Q. Any funny or heartwarming baby moments you’d love to share?
I love watching babies in the morning when they are unswaddled and stretch their arms up.
Q. Coffee or Tea?
Coffee
Q. What’s your favorite activity to do with babies?
IF working during daytime hours I love to do exercises, tummy time, and reading. tracking
Q. When not working with babies and families, how do you recharge?
Read, work with Great Dane Rescue, and visit with family and friends.
Q. What’s your go-to trick for getting little ones to sleep?
Bedtime routine, drossy but awake. No screen time 1 hour before bed (yes even newborns can be stimulated.) Pat, sush, and Paci to help soothe.
Final thoughts
Carol’s overall advice for sleep-deprived parents is to sleep when the baby sleeps, prep for the night, and ask others for help. Carol has a passion for helping breastfeeding mothers and focuses on providing supportive, responsive care. With the long-term and gentle expertise of Carol by your side, you can navigate the early days of parenthood with confidence, knowing your baby is in the best hands from the very beginning.
